What Smells Repel Skunks?

During the fall season, it is common to see an increased amount of Tucson skunk activity since they are trying to gain weight in order to survive the winter season. With the unbearable stench of their spray, you probably think that there is no way that the skunk will be scared of a certain scent. While they do not have a destructive nature, it is wise not to threaten them. The risk of being bitten or getting sprayed increases if you choose a lethal method to dispose them.

Is There a Smell that Can Repel Skunk?
While there are repellents sold in the market today, there are no studies that will support their claims. There are instances that they will work but they do not provide a long-term solution. Once the skunk became accustomed to the scent, they will still invade our property especially if it is safe and conducive.

Citrus Scent
Some people believe that the scent of the citrus can discourage the Tucson skunk from accessing our property. Scatter citrus peel around your property. The peels will gradually dry up and the aroma that they release will weaken. This is why it is necessary to spread citrus peel regularly to achieve favorable result. Some people choose to plant citrus tree and the tree will continuously emit scent that will deter them. There should be at least 6-feet space between the citrus trees.

Jalapeno and Cayenne Pepper
Some simple ingredients found in your kitchen can drive away the skunk. Pepper contains capsaicin that is used as the base ingredient of most repellent. For maximum effect, you should mix onions to create a concoction. The strong and offensive smell of cayenne pepper and jalapeno irritates the mucous membrane of the skunk. To increase the potency of your concoction, be sure to double the dosage.

Ammonia
The scent that the ammonia released can be offensive to Arizona skunks. Simply collect a few rags and soak it in ammonia. Scatter it all over your property especially on the areas where you frequently spot the skunk. Unfortunately, the scent of the ammonia can easily dissipate especially in an open environment. If you don’t have old rags, you may use cotton balls instead. Generously soak the cotton balls in ammonia and place it near the den of the skunk.

Predators Scent
You are probably wondering why skunks are scared of ammonia when their own scent is a lot stronger. This is probably due to the fact that the urine of the cat smells similarly with ammonia. Some people choose to mix their concoction with the cat litters and spread it all over their property. The skunk will be scared but once they notice that there are no predators present in our yard, they will still invade our property.

Repellents contain scent that may affect the senses of the skunk or frighten them. Applying them is expensive and time consuming. It requires numerous reapplication since their scent can immediately evaporate especially on the outdoor environment.
